In 1841, John Smith was in the Navy and living in Worth Street, Portsea, Portsmouth, Hampshire with his wife, Sybil, and daughters Jane (b.1827) and Eleanor (b.1832).

In 1851, the family were living at Park Farm House, Farlington, Hants. John Smith (b.1783, Devonport) was described as a retired commander in the Royal Navy. Also present were his wife, Sybel (b.1796, Scarborough, Yorkshire) and daughters Isabella (b.1826, Portsea) and Eleanor (b.1830, Devonport).
The family had two domestic servants.
