In 1851, Samuel Russ (b.1811, Yeovil, Somerset) and his wife Ann (b.1810, Isle of Wight) were living at 43, Charlotte Street, in the parish of St. Marys in Southampton. Samuel was a butcher and Ann a shopkeeper. With them were 3 visitors (tradesmen) and 2 lodgers.

In the 1861 census, Samuel & Ann Russ were living at 1 Grove Street, in the parish of St.Marys, Southampton. Also living with them was their son, John (b.1831, Brockenhurst, Hampshire). Samuel was a dealer and John was a fireman on board the Southampton to Wight boat.
