In the 1841 census, Joseph Kennett (b.1806) lived in Curdridge Lane, Bishops Waltham in Hampshire with his wife, Rhoda (b.1811) and children, John (b.1833), Mary (b.1834), Lucy (b.1836), Thomas (b.1838) and Elizabeth (b.1840). The family were all born in Hampshire. Joseph worked as an agricultural labourer.

In the 1851 census, the family still lived in Bishops Waltham. Joseph (b.1805, Hambledon) and John were farm labourers. Also living in the house were, Roda (b.1808, Bishops Waltham) , Lucy, Elizabeth, Richard (b.1845, Bishops Waltham) and George (b.1850, Durley, Hampshire).

In 1861, the family were shown living in Portswood Road, South Stoneham. Joseph was a labourer and Rhoda was a needlewoman. Also living with them were Mary (also a needlewoman) and George (scholar).
