In the 1841 census, Charlotte Bushell (b. 1827, Hampshire) was living with her family in Burgess Street, Swaythling, South Stoneham. Her father William (b.1801, Hampshire) was a labourer. Her mother was Sarah (b.1806, Hampshire). Also living with them were 6 other Bushell children. Kate (b.1826), Henry (b.1826), Sarah (b.1830), Elizabeth (b.1834), George (b.1836) and Clare (b.1839). In the 1841 census, Frederick Hillier (b.1826, Hampshire) was living with his family in Swaythling. His father, William (b.1786, Hampshire) was a farmer. In the 1851 census, the Bushell family were still living in South Stoneham although Charlotte was not listed. William (b.1800, Portsmouth) was now a Brick Burner, employing 4 men and 1 boy. In the 1861 census, Frederick was living on Burgess Street, South Stoneham with wife Ellen (b.1831, Eling, Hampshire) and daughters, Eliza (b.1854) and Emily (b.1858). He was a gardener.
Shown on the same page of the census are Charlottes parents (William and Sarah) and her brother Georges family. Implying they were fairly close by.

In 1871, the census shows the family moved to Newman Street, Millbrook, (now part of Southampton). Frederick was still a gardener. He lived with wife Ellen, daughters Emily and Eliza and now had two sons, George (b.1862, Eling) and William H. (b.1864, Eling). In the 1881 census, Frederick is shown working as a beer retailer, living at the Ice House Inn, Shirley Warren, Millbrook. He lived with his wife Phebey (b.1823, Charlton, Wiltshire), daughter Eliza and son, William who worked as a printer.
