(b.1851, Millbrook) and Ann S.C. (b.1853, Portswood). They had one domestic servant, Elizabeth Ireland. John worked as an accountant and estate agent.

In 1881, the family were living in Polygon, Southampton. John was now a chartered accountant employing 11 clerks. Also at the home were Lucy and children, Anna S, Alfred A. (b. 1864) and accounts clerk, Lucy M. (b.1875) and Grace L (b.1876). They had 4 domestic servants.

In 1891, the family lived at Elmcroft, Polygon, Southampton. John James was described as a stockbrokers agent. 8 of his children lived with him, all unmarried and they were mainly professionals, (bank clerk, civil engineer, chartered accountant, auctioneer, student of medicine and a nursing sister).
They had one visitor and 2 domestic servants.
